Everyday Leader Award – Philadelphia

Karen Detamore, longtime leader of Friends of Farmworkers, was honored Thursday night, November 30, 2006, by the Pennsylvania Bar Association and its President, Ken Horoho, with the Everyday Leader Award.  More than 100 local attorneys and others, including FFW staff and board members, joined President Horoho in surprising Detamore with what she noted was the first public award she has ever been given.  Audience members delighted in her surprise at receiving the award and the clear joy of her peers in being able to honor her.  Key portions of President Horoho’s remarks are below.

·        Our “Everyday Leader Award” recipient tonight is one of those outstanding individuals who, when seeing a need in the community or in the legal profession, steps forward to be part of the solution.

·        Countless families have benefited from the tireless work in the community and from her voluntary efforts on behalf of the legal profession.

·        Our award recipient has dedicated much of her professional life to improving the living and working conditions of indigent farm workers, mushroom workers, food processing workers, and workers from immigrant and migrant communities in Pennsylvania. She has been the executive director of the Friends of Farmworkers for 17 years.

·        Prior to her work with the Friends of Farmworkers, our award recipient was in private practice, serving primarily military service members and veterans.

·        She has served as president of the Pennsylvania Project Directors Corporation, the association of executive directors of all Pennsylvania legal services programs for low-income clients. She is past president of the Farmworker Project Group, a national association of farmworker legal services directors. She is a current member of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Board of Governors and co-chair of the Committee on the Legal Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

·        She has been a member of the PBA’s Agricultural Law Committee, Civil Rights Committee, Legal Services to the Public Committee and many others.

·        In addition, she has been a member of the  Brehon Law Society, the Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania, the National Legal Aid and Defender Association.

·        The Everyday Leader Award is given to individuals who go above and beyond, sharing their time and talent to help and support others. Karen Detamore is one of these ‘everyday leaders’ and is deserving of this award in gratitude for her contributions to Philadelphia and the entire commonwealth.
